When talking to you about Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, I am reminded of my very first yoga class.
I wasn’t expecting anything other than some yoga exercises. A friend had been trying to get me to these classes for months, but I always had the excuse that I had too much work to do, and so couldn’t take time off to go.
But finally, in that class, my whole body and spirit were grabbed in a way that my mind couldn’t comprehend. I was lifted, I was contained, I saw gold Light everywhere! Talk about being elevated but grounded in ways that I never had experienced before! By the end of the class, I was absolutely pulsating and radiating!
For years previously, I had been searching for someone who understood the things that I naturally, intuitively knew about the Universe and how it worked. After the class, the teacher began describing exactly what I already knew, but he had better words for it, and he had practices as well to support living that knowledge. I was hooked! That was in 1976, and I am still unraveling the realities of these transformative technologies.
And I have particularly enjoyed teaching others this sacred science. I love to see their glowing faces and miraculous discoveries about what is hidden in themselves. Teaching is like sharing the greatest, secret gems and jewels that are locked within each of us.
A few years later, my friend Shakta Kaur Khalsa was writing her book, “Yoga for Dummies.” I believe it is still in print. She carefully interviewed yogis from all traditions. Those from the Hatha traditions reported that they felt so much better, they had gained in flexibility and health. But overwhelmingly, the Kundalini Yogis most often reported that they would not be here, in this life today if it had not been for the Kundalini Yoga that they practiced.
An asana from the Kundalini Yoga set called
"To See the Beauty Within."
Kundalini Yoga and Meditations are a combination of body positions or asanas (some very active) and Mudras, which are hand/finger positions that regulate the flow of prana or “ki” or “chi” through the meridians of the body. Meridians are the body’s energetic vessel system, rather like blood vessels that carry the Life Force energy to specific areas of the body.
Certain breathing patterns increase and regulate the flow of this prana. And specific Mantras, which are usually ancient words or sounds that have been proven to connect into specialized energy forms of creative awareness are often prescribed.
This incredible combination of ancient energetic know-how removes very real blocks from the body, mind and spirit. It brings supportive, nourishing energy to the body and mind, and raises the experiential awareness of the person so they can break old difficult habits of thinking and feeling to become happy and radiant!
You see, Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, not only has solid protections built into it, but it also transforms and uplifts our bodies, minds and spirits. Imagine yoga sets and meditations that actually help us heal our digestive system, our liver, alleviate depression, help relieve addictions and stress, and support our conscious merger with our very Soul—our God Self, and so, so much more. It is a full system that guides us to raise healthy children and families, gives us natural vegetarian healing diets and self-care habits, and inspires us to be the very best that we are destined to be.
Yogi Bhajan not only gave over 4,000 lectures that often included powerful new yoga sets and meditations each time, but he gave us a framework to understand ourselves as primarily the GOD (Generating, Organizing, Destroying) Force within, and our yearning, our love for that Infinity as the natural human quest.
He gave us an entire lifestyle system, embodied in an organization of being Healthy, Happy, and Holy, which he called 3HO. But he integrated it all with living the down-to-Earth life of a householder—that is making a living, being married and raising healthy families in our current world. He did this with kindness, humor, extraordinary information and inspiration while leading us to make the ultimate commitment to our True Selves, our “Sat Nam” as well as to our lives in this world. He taught us to dedicate ourselves to serve
humanity with love that arises from consistent contact with the Spirit within, and stand for our sacred Destinies.
We can either sample a little of these amazingly transformative tools, or we can make them become our culture of health, coziness, prosperity and happiness to live and thrive in this challenging world. That is up to each one of us. How we use it is up to us. No preaching, only serving.
I am forever grateful for this nitty-gritty, heavenly technology!
If it is healing that we want for ourselves and to serve others, my experience is that there is no better platform for that healing than dedicated practice of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.
